Photography and Videography Underwater

The underwater environment is a critical frontier for science communication because it bridges the gap between scientific research and public action for our most vital life-support system. Covering 70% of the Earth, the ocean regulates climate and sustains global livelihoods, yet remains largely inaccessible to the general public.

This "out of sight, out of mind" reality makes the underwater setting a powerful platform for authentic engagement. Immersive experiences—such as live underwater broadcasts or virtual reality—allow people to witness environmental changes directly, fostering an emotional connection ("emocean") that traditional media cannot replicate. These tools translate complex issues like ocean acidification into tangible experiences, which is essential for driving the pro-environmental behaviour needed for ocean conservation.

Furthermore, the underwater environment serves as a living laboratory for ocean literacy, which is now a core objective of the UN Decade of Ocean Science. By communicating directly from the seafloor, scientists can demystify their work, inspire a sense of wonder, and empower citizens to advocate for evidence-based policies to combat threats like plastic pollution and overfishing.

Insight CEO, Dr Mark Griffin, is currently completing his Divemaster qualification at Queensland Scuba Diving. He is also a diver, conservationist, data scientist, photographer, and videographer with Ocean Connect. Ocean Connect is a Gold Coast-based non-profit organisation dedicated to connecting the community to the coast through marine environmental education, citizen science projects, and local awareness programs. We would like to work with you to capture photography and videography that best meets your needs.

Insight is based within the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct. Our staff are members of Australian Science Communicators and the Australian Academy of Cinema Television Arts (AACTA). Insight is a member of Experience Gold Coast.
