Agricultural Shows and the Ekka
Agricultural shows are vital community events that bridge the gap between city and country, celebrating and promoting local food, fibre, and agricultural innovation. They are essential for boosting regional economies, supporting over 50,000 volunteers, and providing a platform for producers to showcase high-quality livestock, produce, and crafts. Furthermore, these shows offer vital social connection, reducing isolation for farmers while educating the public about agriculture.
The "Ekka" (short for Exhibition) is the Royal Queensland Show, Queensland's largest annual event held at the Brisbane Showgrounds since 1876. Running for ten days in August, it attracts around 400,000 visitors annually, bringing the bush to the city. The Ekka features over 21,000 competition entries, ranging from woodchopping to giant vegetables, and showcases 10,000 animals. It is a celebration of Queensland’s heritage, featuring iconic, award-winning food like strawberry sundaes, alongside carnival rides, showbags, and nightly, world-class entertainment in the main arena. The event is crucial for supporting agricultural industries and fostering community spirit, featuring a dedicated public holiday, "People's Day".
